Week 4 - Question #1

This week you will finish the book. We have had multiple questions for each of the past weeks. This week you have just one question on which to comment.

The Year of the Hangman is a novel in which the author has taken a historical event and given it an alternate ending. Now it is your turn. This week your comment needs to be an alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman. Tell us how you would change the ending. Tell us what happens to the various characters. What happens to George Washington? What happens to Crieghton, his uncle, Sophie, Ben Franklin........ This is your chance to write an alternate ending, be creative and good luck. Maybe the author will make a comment or two about your alternate endings.

I would have ended this book with creighton staying with the Americans and being a spy. He would stay with them and help them with everything that they needed a spy for. I would also have said that he stayed with the Americans and kept on printing the paper with peter and sophie. I would have made him out to be a known person in philidelphia for helping the Americans and printing the paper.

I would have ended the book with Creighton finding Washington alive and in good health. Washington would have told Creighton that his dad had been one of his top assistants after coming to the Americans side. Chreighton would have returned to Louisiana and continued to print the paper. Also, the Americans would have succeded with their attack on the British and finally gained their indpendence. After they became free, Chreighton would have moved to Boston and become a well known politician and later president.

I agree with Steffen in having Creighton stay with the americans. But in my ending Creighton would have been kind of an under cover, special service kind of guy. Also he would create this kind of, high-tech paper that was way ahead of his time. Then you could write a whole nother book about just the special paper printing.

I would agree with logan s. I would have had Creighton find Washington and he would be just fine. I probably wouldn't have Creighton finding his dad at the end and I wouldn't have him go back to the printing press.

What I would have done is had Crieghton remain loyal to the crown. Until, of course, he found out that his father was still alive. Then after his father was nursed back to health, they would command the army of America and crush England with all the ease of a hot knife cutting butter.

I think I would have ended the book with Creighton finding his father dead in the cell. If this were to happen Creighton probably would have gotten very angry the British for locking him up especially when he was on their side. I then think that Creighton would have stayed in the Colonies and helped them win the war. I even think that when Creighton got older he could replace Washington and become a President just like Logan S. said.

If i could have had an alternate ending in the year of the hangman i would have thought it would have been better if George Washington was alive but barely,he and creightons father would have been in the same cell and they where about to be hanged but chreighton, arnold and peter help them escape before they where hanged, also i thought it would have been better if the americans still would have lost the battle but arnold didnt loose a leg

I've been thinking about this for a while and i've finally come to the conclusion that I don't think I would've changed the book. Lets say i did, though...

Ben Franklin would have still been dead. Sophie would've continued making the paper but Washington wouldn't have been dead, he would've been WITH creighton's father in the cell. One comment I had about this book was that I loved how it exagerated to how peter was so incredible and strong. The main thing I would've changed at the end is the colonists losing their battle, and that they actually reclaimed their land and later on became what America is today.

My ending to this book would have been Creighton staying with the americans but being a spy. He would have to quit writing the paper due to all the rigorous work as being a spy. I would have him be a hero to the Americans. This being said he would be well known and therefore England would know about his job. He would then be caught and held for ransom. This is when the Americans will not bargin and Creighton will be left to fight for his own well being. On his fight for freedom he would burn papers that England possessed and be able to get away. But then a sudden twist of events would lead him to be killed by the English. He would go down as a hero in all of America's mind.

if i were to change the end of The Year of the Hangman i would first have Creigton and Sophie get fall in love and get married. Then, his dad will stay with Creigton and Sophie to keep up the Liberty Tree, Harry Brown will also remarry. Third, Ben Franklin would live along with George Washington who Peter helped save. The two men could grow old together and squal like old men do. Peter with his kind heart will marry also to a tall women with as much love as Peter himself. yea a lot of people would get married but hey they deserve it.

If I had a chance to end the book with my own opinion I would have ended it with Creighton finding George Washington alive but he would have been survirly injured and then he would have recovered and Crieghton would stay with the Americans and print the newspaper with Sophie and peter. That is how i would have ended the book.

For my alternative ending it would be a little different than what each person has said so far. I think the alternative ending Logan said was good. I thought it was interesting that Creighton's dad was in the cell, but I would have also put General Washington in the same cell. I would have had Creighton's dad and Washington become friends after Chreighton's dad helped the Americans. Both Washington and Creighton's dad would have been saved and gone to Louisiana with Peter, Creighton, and Arnold. When they all returned home to Franklin's house they all would have helped Sophie in the printing press and written an article together about the entire situation that just occured. Also, in the end Creighton and his dad would write Creighton's mother about all the adventures and events that had happened since Creighton came to America.

For the ending i would have kept Franklin alive. He would keep printing the paper with Sophie. I think Creighton and Harry Brown, his dad, would go back home and the mom would be suprised to see them both.

I would have ended the book with Creighton finding washington and returning him to the capitol. I also think the Americans could still use Creighton as a spy to an advantage. I think Creighton should stay with sophie too on printing the paper. I think it would make both Creighton and Sophie happy

I have to disagree with Jessica H. I thougt that the ending was brilliant! When i read the part about him finding his dad, I gasped and started crying! I like that in a book. But I also have to agree with Jessica H. In my ending I would have had Benedict Arnold and Creighton find both Washington and Mr. Brown both in the prison. But I wouldn't change the fact that they were in bad condition. Haveing a suffering character makes me feel empathy for them. It gets me into the book way more than it would if they were perfectly fine.

I would have had it that They really did decieve the U.S. Then the English really did win the war. They were called Hero's and were smiled upon by all. Leslie W.
